Artist In Residency: Process & Partners
In response to the economic stresses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and in an effort to support artists, the City of Seattle, under #SeattleTogether, is assisting partner organizations to provide funding for artistic endeavors. Friends of Waterfront Seattle, in partnership with the City of Seattle’s Office of the Waterfront and Civic Projects, is supporting this effort with a virtual artist residency and additional artist opportunities.
This Artist-In-Residence Pilot is created to be scalable over time and continue throughout the life of Waterfront Park to allow artist-led projects to be a cornerstone of Friends’ waterfront park programming and ensure participation of a range of artists, especially those representing communities of color.
With Arts Consultant Vivian Phillips serving as Consultant / Facilitator of the Future Forward: Artist-In-Residency Program, the selection panel was comprised of a diverse group of working artists, arts administrators, and entrepreneurs.

ABOUT VIVIAN PHILLIPS, Consultant / Facilitator, Artist‑In‑Residency Program
Vivian Phillips is a veteran communications professional, known for her collaborative style in building partnerships and engaging diverse communities. Her body of work spans radio and television broadcast, independent theatre producing, teaching, and arts and communications management and consulting. Vivian served six years on the Seattle Arts Commission, three years as chair, and currently serves on the boards of 4Culture, PSPR/KUOW and the University of Washington Foundation Board. She is a native of Seattle and resides in the Central Area.
With Takiyah Ward’s vision for the project, a call for artists was sent out to the community for Pier 62 and Pier 63. In partnership with a panel of diverse community members, applications were reviewed and artists selected to create a multimedia experience.
Pier 58 artists and participating elders were selected by Takiyah Ward and Friends’ Community Engagement Team.

About the 2020 Future Forward Artist‑In‑Residence Program
Friends of Waterfront Seattle, in partnership with the City of Seattle’s Office of the Waterfront and Civic Projects, welcomes you to experience the multimedia experiences created through our 2020 Future Forward Artist-In-Residence Program.
This project was led by our first-ever Artist-In-Residence, Takiyah Ward, who envisioned the waterfront as a backdrop to explore the notion, “What is the Truth?” With the conceptual framework of Past, Present, and Future, Takiyah gathered a community of multi-generational storytellers and artists from diverse communities to share their unique experiences and perspectives. We invite you to reflect on these prompts that Takiyah shared with the artists: remember, learn, discern, determine, imagine.
