Native Storytelling with Roger Fernandes (Lower Elwha S’Klallam) and Fern Renville (Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate)
From lessons on how to conduct yourself in a good way to explaining historical events, storytelling has been the primary way for Native people to pass along knowledge. This series, curated by Roger Fernandes (Lower Elwha S’Klallam) and Fern Renville (Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate), will feature Urban Native storytellers and the stories and lessons they’ve carried with them.
Schedule: June through September, first Wednesdays and third Sundays

Meet the Storytellers
Fern Naomi Renville
Fern Naomi Renville is a citizen of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate from South Dakota. She is a Dakota Indian storyteller, artist, theatre director, educator, and teaching artist and is the former Executive Director of Red Eagle Soaring Native Youth Theatre. Fern has a B.A. in Native American Studies from The Evergreen State College and has worked as a practicing storyteller and artist, theater producer, playwright, and actor.
She is an activist in arenas, such as cultural preservation, education reform, and tribal history as well as the sovereign rights of Native tribes and tribal members.

Roger Fernandes
Roger Fernandes is a Native American artist, storyteller, and educator whose work focuses on the culture and arts of the Coast Salish tribes of western Washington. He is a member of the Lower Elwha S’Klallam Tribe and has a B.A. in Native American Studies from The Evergreen State College and an M.A. in Whole Systems Design from Antioch University.
Roger has worked in a variety of areas including Native education, social work, arts, and culture. As an artist, he practices and teaches Coast Salish design and as a storyteller, he shares storytelling as a foundational human process for teaching and healing. He currently teaches courses on storytelling and art at the University of Washington, Northwest Indian College, and other learning institutions.
