Celebrate the lunar new year with a lion dance by the Mak Fai Kung Fu Club and a pop‑up shop from PRSVRC Clothing.
All ages welcomeThe Year of the Tiger officially starts January 22, 2023 per the lunar calendar. Join this joyous tradition to bring good luck and drive away evil spirits with a lion dance on the waterfront. This extra special year calls for an extra special dance for joy and happiness. This dance will not only feature drums and cymbals, but also, weather permitting, jongs—a series of poles on which the performers will balance! Be sure not to miss this amazing performance by the talented Mak Fai Kung Fu Club.
PRSVRNC will also be on site to sell branded apparel with unique designs. Master Royal Tan of Mak Fai and Han Eckelberg are the co-founders of PRSVRNC, a clothing line created to “bring Asian American pride, cultural items and the meanings of Asian American culture into clothing.” Read about the co-founders of PRSVRNC and other local champions in the Seattle Times.
WEATHER NOTE: this event will happen rain or shine, but for the safety of the dancers, if it is rainy the lion dance will be done on the ground rather than on jongs.

CIDBIA Lunar New Year Celebration
For the safety of the community, the Chinatown-International District Business Improvement Area (CIDBIA) is holding its Lunar New Year Celebration event on Saturday, April 30th, from 11am – 4pm.
Vendor booths, dance performances, music, and a food walk are planned for near Hing Hay Park and along S. King St.
About Mak Fai Kung Fu Club
Mak Fai Kung Fu Club was established by Grandmaster Mak Hin Fai in 1974. We specialize in the Hung Sing Choy Lay Fut style Kung Fu and Southern style lion dancing. Mak Fai is Seattle’s premier lion dance troupe, performing hundreds of shows year round. We aim to enrich and promote lion dancing in the Greater Seattle area and keeping the tradition alive by teaching the younger generations in the community.

Founded in the Summer of 2020 when two members of the Mak Fai Kung Fu Dragon & Lion Dance Association decided to turn their vision into reality. Royal, current Sifu of Mak Fai, and his Assistant Instructor, Han, developed the brand while experiencing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Black Lives Matter, and Anti-Asian sentiment. The name reflects the need for persistence in making things happen, to persist and come together when confronting challenges and despair. Our logo for PRSVRNC (perseverance) emerged.

Friends of Waterfront Seattle (“Friends”) is the nonprofit partner to the City of Seattle responsible for helping to fund, build, steward, and program the park — today and into the future. In deep collaboration with individuals, communities, and institutional partners, Friends’ mission is creating, caring for, and activating a renewed place on Seattle’s central shoreline to connect — to the water, to the mountains, to our city, and to one another. In addition to raising $110M by 2024 to fund park construction, Friends will provide funding and manage the programming and operations of the future Waterfront Park through a joint-delivery partnership with Seattle Parks & Recreation. Park construction has begun following the Viaduct’s removal and the first piece of the park — Pier 62 — is now open.
