This dance series will focus on learning choreography to popular Bollywood dance songs.

This five-week dance series will focus on learning choreography to popular Bollywood dance songs. Each week, participants dive into a new song and style. No previous dance experience is needed. We will begin with some stretching and then step right into dance.

Geeta, the Founder and Artistic Director of Afsaana Dance, has been trained in both South Indian (Bharatnatyam) and North Indian (Kathak) classical dance styles, but her first love is Bollywood dance! To Geeta, Bollywood dance is not a style, but a culture. It’s a combination of the classical, folk, and tribal dance styles of India. Bollywood dance is about understanding the spirit and emotions of South Asian culture.

Meet the Instructor: Geeta

Geeta has been performing since she was five years old for the small South Asian community while living in Anchorage, Alaska.  Moving to Seattle only enhanced her performances.  She has performed for various events in the area since 1992 and has been teaching since 1998.  She traveled to India on numerous occasions to study Kathak and Manipuri, perform classical, folk and Bollywood dances, as well as teach Bollywood to children of the holy city of Varanasi. To Geeta, Bollywood is not a style, but a culture.  It’s a combination of the classical, folk and tribal dance styles of India and the Western styles of jazz, ballet, hip-hop, and modern.  Bollywood is about understanding the spirit and emotions of the culture.  Geeta believes that each emotion should be expressed not only by your body, but with your eyes and facial expressions.  There is nothing more accurate in dance than the ability to smile through the routine.  Geeta defines dance as the ability to move your body to your own inner rhythm.  She has previously taught at SkinDeep Dance in Beacon Hill and was the lead choreographer and performer of the Bollywood Project.  She currently teaches at Salsa N’ Seattle.

Created in partnership with Afsaana Dance

Afsaana Dance Company (ADC) was established in 2011, by Geeta.  Afsaana, in Urdu, means a story.  ADC focuses on storytelling Bollywood style!  ADC’s style of choreography takes the audience on a journey.  Bollywood is more than just ‘petting the dog/changing the light bulb’ hand gestures.  We believe that Bollywood is a melting pot of dance styles from around the world. Afsaana Dance Company doesn’t just focus on the latest and greatest songs of today.  We create pieces that take an audience back to the era of that music.  ADC creates routines that truly interpret the ‘Afsaana’. ADC’s mission is to transform our students into powerful dancers and performers.
